Robert Elwyn Daniel, May 3, 1924 - September 10, 2009, of Dallas, Texas passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009. Robert was born in Hughes Springs, Texas to Esther Glass Daniel and Robert Oran Daniel. He graduated from Jefferson High School and completed a year at the University of Texas prior to enlisting to serve in World War II. As a Lieutenant and pilot in the US Navy he served 3 1/2 years, including submarine patrol duty off the coast of Brazil.
Following his honorary discharge, he graduated from Southern Methodist University. He founded and operated the Robert E. Daniel Insurance Agency, worked in the mortgage loan business, and was one of the original organizers of Founders Trust Company. Robert was devoted to the University Park United Methodist Church where he served faithfully as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Trustees, taught Sunday school , and was a longstanding member of the Mr. & Mrs. Class. He was well known for his deep commitment to youth, often cooking late into the night roasting chickens for families in need, fund raising and youth programs. He served on the Board of Trustees of Lon Morris College and was active in the Park Cities Rotary Club. He was a Past Master of Hillcrest Masonic Lodge, where he received the Golden Trowel Award, and was a member of Scottish Rite Masonry and the Shriners. He volunteered for the Rotary Club Meals on Wheels program and North Dallas Shared Ministries. He was as enthusiastic and committed to service through these organizations as he was to his family and wonderful friends. Robert's will to live and love for life itself, coupled with the love of his adoring wife of 61 years, was an inspiration to his family and friends. He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care he received over decades from Drs. Paul Madeley and John Schumacher, as well as from the gifted nursing staffs at Baylor Hospital and the Plaza at Edgemere. He was preceded in death by his brother, E. Ralph Daniel and nephew Ross Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite, son Dr. Thomas O. Daniel of San Diego, daughter Mary Ann Daniel of Santa Monica, CA son Robert E. Daniel, Jr. and wife Amy D. Daniel of Snowmass, CO; grandchildren Corinne, Lyle, Clayton and William Daniel; sister-in-law, Pat Daniel of Jefferson, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. Following a family graveside service at Sparkman Hillcrest, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 2:30 pm at University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth Boulevard, Dallas, Texas 75225.
