FROM THE EAST - OCTOBER

By JasonBunnell - Posted on 03 October 2009

I cannot help but admit I feel somewhat disheartened and overwhelmed with recent events. The issue of relocation has not been easy with the physical move from our home of many years, putting our materials into storage and the process of looking for a suitable temporary option. This has been difficult enough but we have had the additional burden of dealing with the passing of several members in the past few months.

In recent weeks I have been at the service of Past Master Joe Sewell in Abilene. There I heard of a man who could be strong-willed and opinionated, but always interested in “doing things the right way”. Those in attendance also heard of his days as an educator as one of his former students eloquently talked about the many students he positively influenced. I also heard of a giving man who, with his wife, was very active in Habitat for Humanity and actively helped build many homes for the less fortunate.

We have also lost Past Master Robert Daniel, a charter member of Hillcrest Lodge. Reading his obituary I know he was a pilot in the U.S. Navy in Word War II. It was also clear he was dedicated to his family and church. Unfortunately, I never had the privilege of meeting either Brother Daniel or Sewell, or some of our other Brothers who have recently passed. I just know them from Lodge records, stories I hear our members tell, or perhaps seeing their picture on the wall.

I would challenge all of us to try to preserve the memories of these men, and the many others, as they are our history. I would also challenge us to remember their widows and other family members. We should always strive to be supportive as they deal with these difficult issues.

On a more positive note, I am very much looking forward to October as we try to get back to a normal schedule of events. The surroundings may be a bit unfamiliar initially but I would hope it will not keep us from continuing to move forward. Now, more than ever, Hillcrest Lodge needs your support and participation so I would hope everyone will make an effort to attend our initial Stated Meeting at Love Field. The officers and members of Love Field have been very welcoming. There are great opportunities for both Lodges to work together for our mutual benefit. In the coming weeks, I would hope we can pick up where we left off in August, return to our normal business and continuing to plan for the future. I would also hope we can soon announce more positive activities, including social events, as we move into the fall.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Gregg Yates
