FROM THE EAST OCTOBER
Life sure would be boring if we didn't have challenges! One of the most wonderful aspects of Freemasonry is its stability. Core aspects of our Fraternity appear in every lodge throughout the world - the three chairs, the lights, the alter, the Great Light. I think consistency is what makes Masonry so comfortable. Anything that crops up to change our Masonic situation is disturbing. Like our District Instructor Max Gilley told me when he taught me the work: "How many Masons does it take to change a light bulb? ... CHANGE? In Masonry?"
Changing situations in work, relationships, and in the Fraternity are inevitable, and we all know that. Our attitude towards change is an example of our character. I'm probably not alone when I say I've faced changes in my life with attitudes ranging from futile ranting against the unfairness of it all to gratitude for an unexpected blessing. It's an old cliche, but finding the silver lining in every situation is probably the best attitude to take. Working hard to overcome challenges, especially with a group of friends, is hugely rewarding when success is finally achieved. Even in failure, we gain experience, wisdom, and the reassurance we did our best.
As we face changing situations in our personal lives and within the Brotherhood, I believe how we face the situation is just as important as the resolution. The journey must be made; do we enjoy the adventure or bemoan the inconvenience? I think that a happy life results from the first option. So with that in mind, I'll do my best to enjoy my place in the world, my family, my work, and my Fraternity, no matter what challenges arise. I hope you will, too.
